Recordable Memory - The Hard Disk

Hard disk is the storage medium to store the data from the user's computer. In short, it could be said as the data storage medium. In any sort of business infrastructure, it could be used as the large storage medium and in a local home infrastructure; it could be called as the small and efficient storage medium.

Different Types Of Hard Disk

There are several types of such hard disk storage medium. They vary not only in storage capacity but also in the access speed. Some of the types include the IDE, USB, FIREWIRE hard disks, Compact Disks, SATA, SCSI and many more too. The mentioned list will be detailed with the explanations and images to give a brief idea of their capacity and speed.

IDE: This is otherwise called as the ATA, PATA, and the preliminary to the SATA. Most of the system's today use this IDE rather than the advanced technologies. This would be the most basic hard disk used as the storage device. They can transfer speed at the most optimistic speed but they are slower than the SATA. It has nearly a big power connector with 40 pins. Just with this particular pin one can identify the IDE.

SATA hard disk: This is speeder than the IDE. This in simple means the Serial ATA. The power connector is not as big as the IDE power connector. They will very easily replace the ATA or the IDE.

SCSI Hard disk: They are used only in high-level business enterprises. They cost more and at the same time, they have a higher storage capacity and faster accessing speed than the IDE and the SATA.

USB: They could be externally attached to the computer to store any sort of data. They are very portable and they can be nowadays use to transfer data from mobiles, PDAs, Laptops using the USB interface installed in all of these devices. They are slower than IDE or the SATA but they are very portable. Some of the USB interfaces include USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.

FIREWIRE hard disks: They are similar to the USB disk, but they may need a fire wire interface instead of a USB interface. However, USB interface is very adaptable that almost all computers will have a USB interface. There would be very little system with the Fire wire interface.

DVD's: DVD is a mass storage medium where you can read or write data instantly at the same time it could be done in a large scale. This scalability light be less than that of the USB. There were many options with this DVD, they may only read DVD, only once write DVD, rewritable DVD.
